Use a Rustic Color Palette

Rugged, natural beauty is the primary inspiration behind Western and rustic decor. As such, the color influences derive primarily from earth tones and colors found in nature. Western decor typically features shades of brown, taupe, oranges, and reds with accents and pops of cool natural shades of greens and blues. It’s important to incorporate these colors in moderation, though, as going overboard can make a space feel disjointed, busy, or overwhelming. Rooms should adhere to a limited palette of earth tones with select items that add powerful accent colors – and coordinating the color of accent items is sure to create a stunning look. White, beige, or neutrally-colored walls will create contrast that really highlights your decor items and brings them to life.

Incorporate Rugged Materials

Rugged materials are staples of Western and rustic decor. Natural wood, reclaimed wood, rock, leather, metal, and natural textiles connect spaces with the spirit and aesthetic of the West.

Natural & Reclaimed Wood

Natural and reclaimed wood can bring a great touch of the outdoors into your home, can be easily repurposed, and don’t require laborious polishing and finishing. At C Lazy U’s all inclusive resort, an on-site wood mill is used to transform damaged beetle-kill timber into new wood furniture, such as the nightstands and ceiling beams you’ll find in cabins and lodges on the ranch.

Rock, Leather & Iron

Rock, dark leather, and iron furniture items can add powerful rustic accents to a room. These components mix well with other Western design elements, but too many of these items can create a harsh look. Soften a rustic space with touches of lace or jute – jute rugs, pillows, and components deliver the textural appearance of burlap with a much softer feel, and can lighten any Western space.

Add a Touch of the Wild to Your Space

Human relationships with animals – both wild and those found on the ranch – is one of the most important aspects of the Western identity. Animal prints and hides have been seen as “too rustic” in the past, but they’re currently making waves as chic, classic touches to even modern decor styles. Faux and real options both look great, and serve to accommodate all tastes and budgets. Just don’t overdo the use of animal print or hides, as too many patterns can create a busy look!

Antlers and steer skulls are additional wild, stylish elements that add tons of Western flair to a room. Mount them on a wall as a statement piece, lean them on a table or shelf for a boho feel, or turn them into an incredible conversation-starting light fixture like an antler chandelier.

Support Indigenous Artists

Native American designs and artwork are the perfect way to add color, texture, vibrancy, and true Western spirit to a space. Indigenous influences not only serve as stunning statement and accent pieces, and they also allow the original peoples of the West to keep their culture and artistic practices alive. Source these materials from authentic indigenous artisans, and make sure to educate yourself on the cultural significance of different items and the tribes they come from. Decor items don’t have to be purely aesthetic – they can also serve as educational pieces and conversation starters!

Strike a Balance

Whatever your Western design touches or influences, remember to start incorporating elements slowly. Western style is heavy on texture, patterns, and colors – things that can be easy to overdo and overwhelm a room with. Work smart by introducing elements gradually and adhering to a consistent color palette with complimentary hues. Carefully imagine and consider pieces together to eliminate elements that would be too busy or clash together. As you go, you’ll get more in-tune with what Western decor would go well in your house – and you’ll also become more aware of your own individual brand of Western style!

From the Horse's Mouth

The beautiful bar and the friendliness (and amazing memory) of the primary bartender, Trent, made the experience like having an evening drink with your family. When you can walk into a bar, just chatting with a new friend for a few minutes, and the bartender walks over and doesn't say "What'll ya have?" but instead smiles like he means it, then calls you by name as he hands you your drink – that's special. It makes you feel like you're part of the C Lazy U family.
